GEORGE TOWN, GREAT EXUMA

George Town is built around a pond grandly called Lake Victoria. To come and go by dinghy one must pass through this narrow bridge.

George Town is not very picturesque but there are some pretty places. This is the pool at the Peace and Plenty Hotel.

There was no diesel at the fuel dock for a long time. When the tanker came, we were on the opposite side of the dock from which this picture was taken. We moved across so that they wouldn't blow into us in the strong winds.

George Town is the primary destination for hundreds of cruisers. They enjoy a real sense of community among themselves. One of our goals in cruising is to meet nice people but we don't want to be part of a herd. We anchored away for a while before moving to the docks to provision and fuel. Throughout the Bahamas we have found the people friendly, helpful, and courteous. That is the exception rather than the rule in George Town. People on other islands keep their villages as neat and clean as their limited resources allow. George Town is covered with litter. Not litter from cruisers but from locals.
